Off to a great start in this challenging year, James Beard Award finalist chef Jeff Smedstad not only released volume 2 of the Elote Café Cookbook which is available on their website, but on July 28th, he re-opened Elote Café in a new location just off of Sedona’s popular Highway 89, a cozy 1.5 miles from the original location. Continuing the authentic look and feel of the first Elote Café, the 4,800 square foot building features handcrafted hammered copper tables imported from Mexico, hand-stitched leather seating and a hand-carved eucalyptus bar top along with the unique touchpoints such as colorful authentic fabrics, artwork and attention to detail that pulls the fusion of Mexican and Southwestern décor together so beautifully.
"This is the dream of my life," says Smedstad. "I'm excited for a new chapter for Elote Cafe. I hope that the new location will be a positive light and something to celebrate for the people of Sedona during these difficult times."
The menu is certainly something to be celebrated. Using fresh, seasonal ingredients to complement the traditional elote itself are popular dishes such as Smoked Pork Cheeks, Duck Carnitas, Corn Crusted Scallops and Vegetable Mole Verde, ensuring that the menu will please every palate. An expanded wine list, beer, cocktails and a selection of signature margaritas are available to make your evening extra special, and there are tentative plans for a margarita garden and curbside service for patrons who like to picnic in their car.
Finish your meal with Chef Smedstad’s signature Veracruz-style Pastel de Elote, which is a sweet corn cake topped with dulce de leche and vanilla bean and agave ice cream, pumpkin flan or Mexican Chocolate Pie with a cup of rich coffee or a glass of well-aged port.
Elote Café is open from 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for limited dining on the patio and inside. Elote does not accept walk-ins at this time, so please speak to a staff member between 1:00 and 8:00 p.m. to make sure that your reservation has been received and is confirmed. You can also get takeout by calling ahead and placing your order.
